I've only used kernel ppp for a dedicated line, 
and there wasn't any user authentication required in that case,
so I'm probably not much help...
What does your /etc/ppp/options file look like,
and the associated /etc/ppp/pap-secrets and /etc/ppp/chap-secrets?
What kind of authentication is the machine you are connecting to set up to use?
(If it's simply prompting for a username & password, that's pap).

You might add the "debug" option to your options file and check the logs
in /var/log.
