Compact flash, usually spelled CompactFlash, ans SmartMedia are two different beasts. This sounds like a SmartMedia card (which is smallish (1/4 the size of a typical matchbook) with 4-5 contacts on the front). There are SmartMedia to pccard adapters that work with FreeBSD, but I've not seen any work to make the floppy one work. To be honest, I haven't seen a spec for it floating around.
