It's quite annoying/unproductive. Check to make sure that the keyboard accessibility features are disabled, and check your keyboard layout. If that doesn't yield any results, try updating libgnome and gnomevfs2. If it still doesn't work, verify that GNOME is okay by creating a dummy user, and see if the keyboard works for them. If so, clear out your keyboard gconf settings, and try your account again.
