I guess that resource limits can be ruled out since it doesn't work even as root. Maybe some kind of memory corruption. Hmmm... Your truss outpupt indicates that ncmpcpp is loading a lot of i18n / libiconv stuff right before the crash. My installation doesn't do that. Maybe should have a look at that.
