Are you building this in the same directory as you previously built a 2.2.x kernel? I did that, and the compilation stopped at the cd9660 code, so I figured there were some old files in there that didn't get replaced. I just rm -r'ed it and built a completely new one, and the kernel compiled without problems. Maybe that's the case with you.
