There are people building disk servers out of IDE drives these days, and having the ccd configured in a wrong order could be disastrous. I have been running a SCSI server systems for a couple of years now and would have lost several 100GB volumes by now if the devices weren't wired down. (Sometimes the drives just won't show up at boot -- a power cycle usually cures that.)
