I just installed 4.4 and was adding a user via the sysinstall interface, after I had typed in the password in the provided field I moved the cursor to the beginning to count the number of characters, making sure I entered it correctly, and as I moved the cursor forward, each character was displayed, the * changed into the character I had entered.
