The 'no compression' stuff is separate from probing. The tape driver
changes which I will integrate soonest has some changes to accomodate some
SCSI-1 devices more graciously- but probably won't fix this.

I'm kind of inclined to believe that if < SCSI2 that VPD info is very
likely not there (that's serial #).
