In the WindowsXP with Microsof= t = Word can display font correct with all of Bitstream Vera fonts (sans, mo= no = and serif), so might be bug somewhere in freetype, pango or else. I have= = the same result with your screenshots for gtk2/pango. As for the gvim problem, you have to run it with UTF-8 in LANG set. Like= = example, run 'LANG=3Den_US.UTF-8 gvim", "LANG=3Duk_UA.UTF-8 gvim" or oth= er = locale will display correct unless you change the font to Bitstream Vera= = Serif that will display reversed R a bit strange.
