I also have a debian workstation, almost a replica of my freebsd system (openjdk, maven, grails) and both of them behave the same way. For pure server side development I think is as good platform as any other linux, for desktop applications I cannot provide more details, I can run netbeans 7 but I can't use intellij. Best.
