  TCP extensions.  FreeBSD always uses them, and some broken routers screw
packets with TCP extensions up (primarily some old crappy term serve that
I can't remember right now).  Most likely your PPP dialup is into one of
those boxes.

  This is an old question.  I'm sure it is in the FAQ.
