Nothing obvious seems wrong to me. I've seem hangs with ata disks that were accelerated by softupdates but its been >9 months since. If you don't hear from anyone else, try the following: -Download a snapshot from releng4.freebsd.org and work with a generic kernel. -Find a trigger that hangs the machine, -Try it with and without softupdates for every disk. Remove the ata-slave disk and repeat.
