It's much easier than that. You can change the background anyway you want
with xdm, simply add the proper command to /usr/X11/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0
Such commands:
xsetroot -solid blue &
or
xpmroot Kewl-graphic.xpm &
or
xv -root -quit {gif|jpeg|whathaveyou}
Xpmroot comes with fvwm. Xv is, of course in ports (and packages). There
are about a million options to xv, so I'm not going to go into that.

xearth could also go into the Xsetup_0 file.
