Quite technically I belive all you NEED is / /root /boot and /etc on your
bootable volume. Once the system loads the kernel and mounts the rest you
should be fine.
What I have is / on one partition and /usr is the vinum volume. My /var,
/home, /src, & /tmp are all symlinked back to the /usr volume.
