I had however one other HP165G5 (8 Gb ram) which had sporadic boots and re-boots; also sporadic install failures. One would expect that it had a memory problem, yet memtest, run for 5 days straight didn't have a singe glitch. Since FreeBSD is not a 'supported' OS for HP, I was stuck with their tech support because they wouldn't help me, leaving it to my own devices. I had to get an OS which HP -did- support to garner their help. So I downloaded SuSe Live 64-bit 11.1 (and now they have 11.2). To make a long story short, SuSe Live would not boot, and with its help I found one stick of ram which was bad. Replaced that stick and everything works as expected. Since I have isolated the bad stick with a 'supported' OS, HP replaced it no problem. Running memtest on that one bad stick found ZERO errors on the stick. So, SuSe Live 64 bit CD has become my memory tester of choice. FreeBSD is my OS of choice. So, perhaps, your Thinkpad simply has bad memory? And a SuSe live may help you find that out. - Jim Pazarena famd64@paz.bz
