If you redirect console messages in /etc/syslog.conf to /var/log/console.log, then tail -f that from a separate ssh login, you will not be as 'blind' to what is happening behind that 'X' screen. See also /var/log/messages, var/log/all.log & friends... Sometimes the culprit is even in /var/log/maillog. Overloaded SpamAssassin or such are just examples. Running top -SH in yet-another ssh session can't hurt, either.... Quite often a line or three of such log entries will tell the tale w/o the need for divining cores or dumps at all, and will at the least paint a picture as to what was going on immediately preceding the fault.
