I had that problem and a

mkdir /usr/local/lib/aout
make -DNOCLEAN upgrade

restarted the process and everything seemed to be working fine when I
left for classes this morning. It was rebuilding XFree86 when I left
because when I tried running it it could not find libXmu. I figured
an ELF rebuild could not hurt.
