What video card are you using? How much ram and what processor do you have? What FreeBSD release and XFree86 version did you install, and are you using the latest bsd DRI code (http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~eanholt/devel/dri/ for info)? Do you see anything suspect in your XFree logs (/var/log/XFree86.0.log)? Read it carefully, as you can get errors in many different places there. However, I can say that I haven't had any reports of slowdowns like that yet.
