I'm trying to get 4.1-RELEASE installed on an old Compaq Proliant SCSI
disk array but it hangs right after the "waiting 15 seconds for SCSI
devices to settle" message. (Well, actually, if I'm very patient, I'll
see a bunch of timeout messages after about 5 minutes. Then
/stand/sysinstall tells me I have no disks.)

The drives are Compaq-labeled Seagate 4.3GB Baracudas (ST15150) ultra
wide single-ended. The array bears the number 6528 on the back and I
have a hunch it's a storage add-on for the Proliant 6500 server. It was
built in late 1995. I can't find any docs on this beast. I assume it's
internally terminated since there's only one SCSI connector. (Can
anybody confirm this?)

The controller is the on-board Adaptec chip on an ASUS P2B-S mainboard.

The SCSI BIOS can see all the drives. It can format and verify the
drives just fine. This leads me to believe that the drives and the array
are fine.

I've tried to boot other operating systems on this setup and they also
hang while searching for SCSI drives. This leads me to believe it's not
just a FreeBSD thing.

If I unplug the array and plug in other SCSI drives, the controller can
see them using the same cables. This leads me to believe that the
controller and cabling are fine.

So I'm left to conclude that there's something incompatible between the
controller and the drive array that cuts across operating systems.

Could the cabling/termination be good enough for a format/verify from
the SCSI BIOS to succeed but an OS drive detection attempt to fail?
Seems like a longshot.

All thoughts appreciated since I'm stumped.

    Thanks,

    Bob
