It's a quite powerful tool (some programs/scripts and wrappers for existing tools for managing the ports) and if used properly, upgrading for example mozilla or kde is not a problem at all. If you just install new versions on top of old versions, there might not even be a problem in running the new one, but you may have different libraries or some binaries twice and in the end, you have a mess in your ports/packages database. I know, I had (3 versions of gtk, 4 diff. versions of Qt, etc etc..horrible). Portupgrade can also be used to correct such things (fix the database, delete old shared libraries).
