The manpages of dhclient and dhclient.conf are not very helpful.. Instead I reinvoked dhclient for the interface with dhcpdump running. The output looks right to me (see below, slightly obfuscated).. Notice that both the request and the reply contain the correct hostname (in option 12). However, the hostname does not seem to be set in the end (hostname still reports the old name). And yes, I did restart the DHCP server after changing the config.
