The kernel, as delivered, doesn't support the D rev, but the PAO package
does.  See http://www.jp.freebsd.org/PAO.  I believe a boot floppy is
available for newer RELEASEs, I haven't checked lately.  Once it works,
you can always upgrade by putting the necessary files on the system and
doing a local filesystem install.

Permissions?  lpd running?  IRQs assigned to the lp ports?

This is classic ppp behavior...A patch was applied during the 2.1.7 series
to help add some robusticity.

Try 2.1.7.1 or 2.2.1.
