This does not happen when I boot verbosely. The drive works perfectly with DMA active (as UDMA33) once the machine is booted. I will attach the updated dmesg output, in case it changed after the ata update from CURRENT, but the device in question is this one: LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163/GDHJ.
