ALSA on FreeBSD doesn't support direct hardware access, it uses plugins such as OSS, Jack, PulseAudio. Try instead: $ pkg install ffmpeg $ ffmpeg -f oss -i /dev/dsp foo.wav <Type Q or Ctrl+C to quit> $ ffmpeg -i foo.wav -f oss /dev/dsp <Type Q or Ctrl+C to quit>
