This happens on both 7.0-current and 6.2-stable, and with a plain startx, kde, and xfce. However, if I wait to load snd_hda until after apci gets loaded (which seems to be the only thing that matters), I don't have the problem, i.e., I can ctrl-alt-fn to other consoles. The only other odd thing is that I compiled vesa into the kernel, and see VESA: set_mode(): 24(18) -> 24(18) written to the console everytime I switch from X. I don't have any idea what's going on, but figured passing this along might help someone more knowledgable. thanks... don $ uname -a FreeBSD localhost 7.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT #0: Wed Aug 8 22:06:24 UTC 2007 root@:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/HP_SMP i386 $ cat /boot/loader.conf debug.acpi.disabled="sysresource" $ dmesg Copyright (c) 1992-2007 The FreeBSD Project.
