You need to make sure that the settings for the plotter match with the
settings for cuaa1. See printcap(5) for how to set stty settings in the
printcap.  And/or grab lprng, a improved lpd, from the ports tree.  I use
it here and love it.  It uses a less twisted stty syntax.
