From the ATA manpage, WDMA2 == DMA2 == 16MB/s. What motherboard and ATA controller do you have? The 'atapci0' line from the boot messages would be useful here. It might be worth checking the BIOS settings for the drive. I had a problem last week with an older UDMA33-capable motherboard that was putting everything in PIO mode when using the 'auto detect' setting. Windows and Debian both believed what the BIOS was telling them, which did not make for a good CD-burning experience :-( Again, if you want anything more than UDMA33 to work, you'll need the right cable. Are you sure you have an 80-wire cable in there?
