Sounds like "dangerously dedicated" is what her boyfriend did... You'll probably have to go through /stand/sysinstall to rebuild the partitions so fdisk will see the drive. Try looking at: http://www.freebsd.org/tutorials/formatting-media/x138.html to convert it back to something DOS will see.
