I wasn't even aware that this sort of thing was necessary, especially when you don't make any changes at all to /etc/login.conf from the default that gets installed. However, I believe that re-installing Diablo 1.24-REL solved the problem for me (I don't recall seeing the errors since), although I've now done the command you suggest, just to make sure.
