personally, i won't connect to the internet at all without at the very
least a basic packet filter. all it would take would be a few minutes for
someone to get in and take over your system...

you log in, someone gets in through some hole. they install a root kit,
and a little script to post to an irc channel whenever you log in. then
anyone can use you as a jumping point to get to wherever.
