That did it. Had to remove the old php.ini-dist and php.ini then force a
portinstall of php4 again. Once that was done mv'ing the php.ini-dist to
php.ini and restarting apache solved it.

Can we make sure this is added to the UPDATING file.

Ah, yes, that was one step that I forgot to list.  I merged my old php.ini
with the
new one.  That may be what did the trick.
