Evaluate these lines from the scratch buffer: (toggle-debug-on-error) (setq load-path (cons nil load-path)) (byte-compile-file "/usr/ports/editors/slime/work-full/slime-2.20/slime.= el") Also, it looks like slime 2.23 is available.
