there is a thread on "silicon investor," a stock message web site about
linux. i posted the white paper that jordan wrote. it got a lot of
favorable response, but nobody had heard of FreeBSD there.

then someone said, from reading the stuff on cdrom.com about Linux and
FreeBSD, that FreeBSD was for professionals and Linux was for "home users."

i wrote this marketing stuff and realize that it IS presenting a distorted
perception of the ease of use of FreeBSD verses linux.

in general i would now say that FreeBSD is the Easiest to use free unix on
the market. walnut creek's marketing material might be updated after all
this time.

what in your reading made you come to this conclusion? i'm really curious,
because this is the general perception, but FreeBSD and linux are really
very similar to the non-kernel hacking user. why do you think linux is
friendlier?

Jack,
This is how distributor http://www.cdrom.com/ presents them:

"FreeBSD 2.2.6 is a full, professional quality, UNIX-compatible operating
system."

"Linux is a UNIX clone, .... for mid-size businesses and departments, but
user-friendly enough for home users.

I have no experience with either one. When I buy a new computer by the end
of the year, I will order a CD ROM from one of the distributors, and will
rely, of course, on their opinion.
It might be just a perception, but this is how perception becomes a reality.
If you have an experience with any or both of them, please, share it with
us.
