Why / should be the first > on Alpha and shouldn't on i386? Because the alpha bootloader was written by people who had never considered putting / anywhere but first. If you'd like to make the bootloader smart enough to handle reading the disklabel and finding the root partition, we'd be very happy to accept patches.
