Since there have been a few grumblings on the mailing lists about
these changes, I would hold off on any of these commits until they are
settled.  I've already fixed one man page typo in these commits, and bde 
pointed out some other man page and C style points that should be
fixed, too.

This is just the type of thing that the current "committers by-laws"
document that has been going around is trying to address.
