   The man page for less(1) says:

   -f or --force
      Forces non-regular files to be opened.  (A non-regular file is a
      directory or a device special file.)  Also suppresses the  warn-
      ing message when a binary file is opened.  By default, less will
      refuse to open non-regular files.

   However, if passed the -f or --force flags, less does not open a
   directory.

   # less -f <directory_name>
   <directory_name> is a directory

   # less --force <directory_name>
   <directory_name> is a directory
