A network with an access point operates differently to an IBSS network. There are changes to the way beacons and packets are handled at the MAC layer. Whilst these changes are not great, they do require that firmware on the wireless cards be told that they are in the managed network. The 802.x specs. have been made freely available for download at www.ieee.org.
