The law over here limits the 56kb modems to 53kb but you can get 53kb connections. I can relate to the ADSL being a vast improvement. For example, I've downloaded a couple of test CD's from Microsoft twice in one week. That amounted to 1GB over the week. The FreeBSD iso's were larger and downloaded much faster and I only had to grab it once. Your horizon of what is possible changes drastically :).
