At the urging of several on this list, I upgraded my cooling and put a thermocouple on the chip. It was no where near hot enough to exceed specs at any point I could get the probe on. So... I started looking at memory. I had 2 DIMMs, a 64 MB and a 32 MB. Neither has ECC. One was a Micron board that came with the computer and the other was Compaq board that come with my other system and became a spare when I increased the memory size on it. If I removed the Micron board, the situation did not improve at all. When I pulled the Compaq board, all was well. Of course, cooling the memory batter often makes it work better, so those opening the cab and pointing a fan into it or adding extra cooling may well "fix" a memory problem as well as a CPU problem. While the CPU might occasionally be the problem, if properly heat-sinked and ventilated, I suspect that memory is a more common problem. I saw 128 MB ECC PC133 memory at a very reasonable price at Fry's last week and I'm tempted to upgrade. I suspect it would eliminate a lot of random faults and would port to an Athlon when I upgrade.
