Yes, I'm sure that /usr/sbin/sendmail isn't a symlink.

I couldn't find any reference to smail in any of the rc files. I
do have these lines in /etc/defaults/rc.conf

sendmail_enable="YES"   # Run the sendmail daemon (or NO).
sendmail_flags="-bd -q30m" # Flags to sendmail (if enabled)
