Maybe if you post your > fstab someone will spot something. Actually, after much oainful digging through rc files (which proved to be a total red herring1) I did find the problem. The dirves are mouted before named is started, hence the machine names need to be in /etc/hosts Stupid error on my part, because I know this is the case for NFS! Sorry for the noise... -pete.
