I'm not sure if this is related, or even abnormal, but gconfd-2 is 
taking up 20.3MB of memory on my install.  I used System Monitor to look 
at the memory maps for gconfd-2 and 20584K of it is mapped in one chunk. 
  The next biggest chunk is 936K.

It has not hung at all though (/me knocks on wood).
