Just as a datapoint -- I looked at the contest when it started, because I quite like my X desktop, and so do several people who've taken it from me and adapted it for themselves. I didn't submit it for the contest because it uses several programs (in the ports tree) that are quite important to it. For example, procmail splits mail in to different folders, xbuffer displays the mail in those folders, mutt runs on the mail in the folders as necessary -- at least one of those programs wasn't in the approved list, and I have other examples as well. The effort to try and pull those features out and still have a (to me) useful desktop outweighed the amount of time I could dedicate to putting it together.
