Most of the issues were workstation-related. As a server, FreeBSD 4.4RC5 was
fine for what I needed. As a workstation, it needs a tweak here and there
which isn't so off the mark as most Linux distributions. The issues are not
really uncommon from what I found in the Windows world where someone hasn't
kept in line with the HCL or bought hardware not supported by the product
(yet). The other is configuring the applications for your environment.

I actually tried to start writing down a list of procedures on how to
properly do this or that using FreeBSD on a Thinkpad. A few people have done
this (FreeBSD Diary) in other forms but what I have found is old information
or unanswered questions. People figuring things out but not sure if it
"really" works properly. Some questions I have asked are in the "known bugs"
lists of different web sites with random answers in which many of them were
incorrect or outdated. I didn't mind the outdated info so much, it was when
I found information that wasn't answered or not clear in how you should fix
your issue "exactly". Sometimes, it is just a lack of clear examples.

My comments are not really pointed at my testing with FreeBSD but many
operating systems. Linux and Windows are the documentation leaders (besides
Apple or Sun) when it comes to telling you how to do this or that. I thought
with FreeBSD I could accomplish something similar where you can find one
documentation related to FreeBSD-multimedia, audio, CD playback and
recording, and MIDI. The other document dealt with running FreeBSD on some
of the older laptops and new ones. There are websites on some of these
subjects but much of it is not in a "book" form. I don't think there is even
a clear cut document telling you how to build a high-performance server
using FreeBSD v4.3-R on a particular platform. Something that is very simple
and clear on the approach.

You can search the FreeBSD mail archives, documents, and even the Linux
knowledgebases for most of the answers. I was just pointing out what I have
noticed while setting up my system. Sendmail and KDE was addressed before by
other people (the project was frozen then). There is no option during
install to load either Xfree 4.x or XFree 3.3.6. The parallel port wasn't
assigned a port. Just small things that some people feel are important.

We take a lot of things for granted.

Ok, back to -stable.

Ken
4.4RC5
