I've merged in most of the buffer overflow fixes that have come
across since the first of the year (since you have to start somewhere,
right?).  Please let me know if there are any problems that you
encounter.  I've already merged the them back into 2.1.x and 2.2.x
branches.  If there are problems, then those backmerges will need to
be backed out.
