If you're using WPA, create your /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf:
network={
ssid="myssid"
psk="mykey"
}
Then you need the entries in /etc/rc.conf to create the wlan0 interface
and set it up for WPA and DHCP:
wlans_ath0="wlan0"
ifconfig_wlan0="WPA DHCP"
If you're not using WPA, well, why not?
