Not sure what to tell you. GNOME on a clean account starts just fine for me. I use GDM, but startx with: exec /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-session Should also work. You may want to verify the permissions on /tmp and /var/tmp are 1777. Sometimes invalid permissions can causes GNOME to choke since it can't create the ORBit temp files.
