Well, ppp knows how to use the netgraph pppoe node but it doesn't know how to use netgraph nodes in general.. Mpd can connect to any arbittrary netgraph node that you may have previously configured in any arbitrary manner.. (I use this to make it run across certain tunnels etc.)
