This "new" adapter (see http://www.fore.com/press/current/PR89_25.html) is in fact the same ForeRunnerLE adapter FORE has had for some time. This adapter is based on the IDT NICStAR SAR chipset and requires more work on the part of the host device driver whereas the 200/200E series adapters have an i960 on the adapter which off-loads work from the host to the adapter. At this time, HARP as distributed in FreeBSD does not support the IDT chipset (thus does not support the ForeRunnerLE adapaters) and we do not have any immediate plans to change that. That being said, Mark Tinguely (tinguely@plains.nodak.edu) has done a HARP device driver which does support the IDT chipset. Mark's code can be obtained from: ftp://ftp.cs.ndsu.NoDak.edu/pub/freebsd/atm/nicstar.tgz I also would like to point out that the $99 price is only for the UTP version of the adapter, and only when purchased in conjunction with the ForeRunnerLE switch. Further restrictions are that you may only purchase one adapter at the $99 price for each port on the switch, so a max. of 16 adapters per fully populated switch. I have also been told that the LANE Services (LES/BUS/LECS) are nolonger included with the LE switch and must be purchased as a seperate option. This may not be an issue for most FreeBSD/ ATM users since the HARP software does not support LANE at this time. (Again, we have no immediate plans to support LANE but it's just one of several topics that's under consideration.) -- Joseph Thomas E/Mail: jpt@networkcs.com Network Computing Services, Inc. jpt@magic.net 1200 Washington Ave So.
