This is a really *******BAD******* idea.  4:1 ratio leads to
mysterious hangs on boot in our systems (as often as 1 in 3 on some
configurations), while 8:1 doesn't (we've had 2 hangs after 5000
reboots).  Please back that part out, or use -f 512.
